Heat Syncope

A feeble mountain climber may suffer blackouts because of the loss of strength after intense physical activities, especially when the lost water and salt content inside his body cannot be replenished in time.

The common symptoms include fatigue and fidgets, headaches, dizziness and nausea, a pale face and cold wet skins, short and shallow breaths, quick and weak impulses, possibly accompanied by leg or abdomen cramps. Body temperatures remain normal or below.

To avoid the syncope, those physically weak are advised to take frequent rests and preserve strength while climbing mountains. Drink more saline water or drinks to replenish the lost electrolyte.

If anyone faints, immediately move him to a shady place and let him lie down. If the patient is conscious, give him some cold water to drink. If he sweats a lot, or is accompanied by cramps, diarrhoea, or vomiting, add some salt in the water he drinks (one teaspoonful per litre). If he has lost consciousness, place him down for a rest until the symptoms are relieved, and then send him to hospital for further treatment.
